Default Some LR questions (reef)

To cure, or not to cure?
Given that I'll have the time to cure LR, is there any benefit to
getting uncured LR over cured (for a brand new tank)? I vaguely
remember reading that uncured LR will give you a wider variety of
critters, but I could be wrong.

LiveRock vs DeadRock
Considering that I'll need approx. 200 pounds of LR, and the last time I
priced it it was $8.00 (CA -- approx. $5.00 USD) per pound, is there any
disadvantage to buying mostly "dead" rock, with some LR to seed it?

TIA,
- M.

Default Some LR questions (ocean live)

You can have 90-95% dead and 5% live. This way will save you some buck but
will cost you time. The 5% live will need time to migrate / proprogate to
see the rest of other area. The deversity will be less when compare to all
live or half.

There is no such thing as fully cure LR. As soon LR taken out of water, any
critter inhabit on it will soon or later will die. Either case, you will
still need to cycle the LR in QT or whatever tank. The only time it call
"Fully Cured" LR is when the LR is finished cycle from QT tank and to
transport it to the Main Tank within second of that trip.

In short summery:
5% LR can seed the rest of your DR or even the ocean. It just the matter of
time.

In article <3F142DBF.D68EA322@swbell.net>, melev@swbell.net says...

*grin* I'll be taking lots 'n lots 'n lots of time (so that I can save
up between "stages" to do the next part properly), so, yeah, curing 200
pounds of LR right in my display tank, 20 or so pounds at a time with
full cycle? No prob's. :-) :-)

Default Some LR questions (green)

Of course having all LR with more cured than not is better. When you
indicate you have low in green $$$, then you have really no choice but to
have less LR that you can afford. Less LR you have the less diversity you
get.
