Ok... I'm having my live rock filter as suggested to make all things
natural for my tank... BUT I have been told that a live rock filter
system will half the ammount of fish my tank can take...

How many fish will my 40 (UK Gal) tank take with coral and cleaners in
it? It's been hinted that my tank may only take 2 fish...?

Will having two filters (i.e. having a mechanical/bio filter
too)increase the amount of fish?

Simply put, maybe. <g> There are few absolutes in this
hobby\obsession. Much of the answer would hinge on knowing how much
Live Rock you have. Another variable is the type of fish. I.E.: how
large the fish will get, how territorial the fish is, how aggressive
they are, etc.

I have to agree, I had a tank that had a little amount of Real live
Rock,(not base rock) and I had a hell of a time keeping it going.then I
tried to go back with a wetdry and all of a sudden the tank snapped and is
running fine. The amount of live rock does matter!!!!

It's a tough question,..really! You have a good amount of LR in
there. You *might* get away with 8 small fish, you might only get 2
larger fish. The size of the tank really has much less to do with
stocking levels than the temperment and requirements of individual
species. You just have to decide what fish you'd like to keep, then
research the needs of the individuals, and determine from there which
ones will co-exist peacefully. In freshwater aquaria, you can use the
"one inch of fish per gallon" guideline, but there just isn't such a
rule in marine. I've heard people say "one inch of fish per 5
gallons", but I really don't think this is a safe guideline to
utilize. My 75 gallon has 5 fish, (and some other critters) and I
consider it fully stocked. They're smallish, but the temperment of
the fish won't likely tolerate additional inhabitants. This is due to
poor planning on my part at the beginning.
As for the extra filter, with the amount of rock you have
(provided it's properly cured?) you will not likely need it. In fact,
many would say it could be harmful because the filter media will
produce nitrates which the LR must process, reducing your potential
fishload.

There no such a real guide. Every fish have it own personality. You need to
find and research of the species you want to keep. With that general species
information, use this guide as generalization only. You can try add one or
two at a time depending on the species that paired from the begining or not.
Then add one more to see if everything like your tank natural or mechnical
filteration can holdup with the BIOS load you just added. Wait for a week or
so and see if the water parameter indicated. Your test result should dictate
to add or not. Every tank are setup differently from each individual.

Hi Dan,
If you have good quality live rock at about 1.5lbs per
gall minimum that and a deep sand bed is all the filtration you need
along with good water flow, by good quality I mean plenty of porosity,
then it will not limit the tanks capacity for fish in fact just the
opposite. Your tank will hold about 24" of fish total length when full
grown, this is a very rough estimate there are to many variables to
give you an accurate answer, the golden rule in salt water is :-
patience, change things very slowly, and always less rather than more
fish. ( I would steer clear of Damsels most of them are aggressive
little buggers and near impossible to catch without tearing your tank
to bits ).

Thanks for your help....

I'll have about 55lb of live rock to start with... plus whatever the
coral is attached to so hopefully I'll be ok... I'll add slowly and see
what happens... No doubt I'll be on here often with lots of questions
in the next few weeks and beyond...
