I'm looking into an RO system, so I can give up buying gallon jugs at
walmart. Any recommendations?

Yep.......dollar for dollar.Filterdirect.com is the way togo.
You can buy a Kent or coralife or any number of other "big name"
brands sold by aquarium and fish shops, and one is not any better tan
the other. You can get soaked dollar wise or get a perfectly capanble
unit and sabe a lot of money. Checkout Ebay auciton site for a selled
that goes by filterdirect. You can elect to bid on enbay or just use
his toll free number and give him a call. His phone nuber is listed on
his ebay store stuff. The fellas name is Oscar, andhe is locate din
CAlifornia. He willsellyou a unit without haivng to go through Ebay
for whatever his buy it now price is, which is about half of what most
LFS charge for a similar unit.

Somew folks say 100 gpd is not the way to go as its not going to give
good water. I have two of them and both are 99% pure output accoding
to my TDS meter. If yu prefer to go with a lower GPD rate, Oscar will
install whatever membrane you desire for no additional charge.......
IMHO , I give $122 for a RODI unit with reechargeable DI resin
carts, and a total of 5 stages delivered to my door. Thats a good
price. I gave 108 for a unit from Aqua Safe or somehting liek that,
who is yet another seller on ebay and the unit has been nothng but
trouble, and when yu consider whats involved with them, its hard to
imagine they can be problematic. I have had trouble with auto shut
off, cracking housings etc etc. It cost me $130 delivered and its been
crap. I have since purchased yet another from Filterdirect and
installed it in my barn for my fish room down there andits been
trouble free as well. So my vopte is out to Oscar of Filterdirect for
a good price and great service on a rodi unit. That is unless you like
to plop down 200+ and not get anythng any better

Yea, and they are also the ones I had nothing but trouble with as
well. They are ready to jump on the phone and take an order for a unit
and grab the money, however try and get warranty out of them. They
refused to return emails, or phone calls, and their phone nunber
actually is in CAnada not the USA. They come on with a speach that
they only do "e" commerce, "e" tech support and e everything else.
What they do the best is ignore you if you got a problem.

I have not affiliation with Filterdirect, who has been on Ebay for a
long time as well, and I was a bit gun shy on ordering yet another
rodi unit off ebay vendors , especially with the satisfactioon Aqua
Safe gave me......... er ah did not giv eme. I called filters direct,
and ordered one, and after talking to the man that owns Filterdiredt,
to see if their parts would work the Aqua safe one, he said yes the
parts in question should pretty well fit. He sent me the parts at no
charge to fix his competitors unit......I have since fixed that
"other" vendors unit and sold it........and hjave purchased yet
another of the Filter direct models.

I still like purchasing from a company that is not too good to talk to
me, once they have my money. And when I need replacement media and
such I like to talk to a real person then as well. In my experieince
Aqua ***X is a poor excuse for a vendor and goodluck getting something
if on warranty or such. Just ain't gonna happen. Call Filterdirect a
call and talk to the owner Oscar.....he sure will treat you right. Oh
those units are american made by Honeywell Inc, and go by the name of
Water General. Aqua safes units have China made housings on them and
were "part" of my problem with cracks and leaks.

Yet another problem or short coming with the Aquya Safe units is till
you add in the high $30 some dollar shipping costs your already over
what Filter Direct charges. ....bout $20 in continental USA. The one
piece DI chamber on the Aqua safe is prone to channeling so yur
wasting a lot of di resin media as compared to better units that have
two individual rechargeable carts installed instead of one large cart.
The both brands holds the same amount of resin contrary to what Aqua
ZSafe says, with their s supposedly being bigger. Its not true.
Channeling of di resin is a major problem with large canisters and
thats what has lead most manufact to go with a smaller rechargeable
cart so its more effective and eliminates the potential for channeling
better.
And with Filterdirects water general they will include what supply
adapter you need and not charge extra for one thats not in the kit..
Checkouy how much aqua safe charges for replacement filters and
membranes and di resin..a lot more money than Filter direct does.

I haven't had a problem with mine.

Thank you to both Tristan and The Rock for a constructive and CIVIL
discourse on the subject. So often discussions on the Usenet dissolve
into nasty exchanges.

I will be in the market shortly for a RO/DI unit to create water for
an anodizing line I am setting up and your comments have been a great
help.

One comment, Tristan, your posts will benefit greatly (and be much

Thanks for both of your posts. I think I'm starting to understand these
things.

What about sulfur? We have a ton of this stuff in the water. The
treatment plant reeks of it as they aerate the water to get rid of it.

Where does the junk go? Is there a flush cycle to remove the junk or
does it just get caught in the filters? Do I need to locate it near a
drain?

btw, I did a hydrolysis experiment with my daughter and after a few
days, the water was just unbelievable. I threw it out and used
distilled instead.

Are you talking about sulfur in tap water or tank water ?


What is hydrolysis experiment telling you about the water ?
This is only trick a filter salesman does on you to sell you the filter.
It means nothing.
