1997 hyundai accent coupe i gear change problem

I cannot select 2nd,4th and have trouble getting it in reverse. Is this due
to a problem with the cables connecting to the gear change. If not is it
the gearbox that is broken or does the clutch need replacing or both.

It sounds like a cable issue (all the gearshift back gears are difficult).

Check under the hood to see if the cables are coming apart or if they're
not clipped in place properly. If okay, then check in the console for
the
same issues.
