Default Change oil or filter or both

1996 with 60K miles vehicle gets little driving 2004 300 miles and 2005
2000 miles. I use syn oil my question is it necessary to replace oil
and filter at say six month intervals?. I ask one syn oil guy and he
believed that I only need to replace the filter. I just can't seem to
convince myself what to do.
Thanks in advance.

IMO you don't need to change at six month intervals for the amount of miles
you've driven when using synthetic oil. You should be able to go for a one
year period and if you use the extended life sythetic (meets European
standards) you could go for two years with the mileage you've listed. I
would change oil and filter now since it's been two years. You should drive
the car at least once a month for at least a 30 min drive, preferably on the
highway. This will heat all engine internals enough to cook out any moisture
in the oil and on internal engine surfaces which will prevent sludge.

My wife's '93 has 37K on it. I do the oil once a year with about 2.5K
on it. I warm it up really good, then take it up and down some hills,
winding it up in the process. Then I come home, put it on the ramps
and pull the drain plug. The oil comes out dark. I replace the filter
every time. So far so good.

Change oil and filter now, I wouldnt go 2 years. Mnfg rating is 6
months. maybe a bit longer is ok but moisture collects it must be driven
hours to warm and dry out, not driving a car will affect other
components as well.

Why is it that we as consumers always try to re-invent the wheel so to
speak?

I don't care how much you drive the car, if your using a regular oil
filter, the rubber gasket will not function properly after 3 months. So I
would change it 4 times a year no matter what.

As for the oil, nobody knows anymore. Does synthetic last longer? yes.
Does it sludge like regular conventional oil? yes. I used to work in the
auto industry, and no matter what the vehicle manufacturer recommends,
people do whatever they want any way.

I've seen people go 7k-10k between oil changes and the oil never come
clean again and that was using mobil one super synthetic oil. Then again,
same would happen with any oil being neglected for extended periods of
time.

I change the oil on my 91 camry with 160k every 3 months or 3,000 miles
using a toyota oil filter and vavoline maxlife synthetic oil. My oil goes
in clean and comes out dark BUT NEVER BLACK. I get 35/38 miles to the
gallon on the highway and 32 in the city.

People just don't understand, it doesnt matter what oil you use, it wont
last as 10-15k or 1-2 years at a time. Why can't you just accept that
fact and service your vehicle properly. You want it it be reliable and
get you around town but you dont want to change the oil every 3 months?
Thats like wanting your baby to grow strong and healthy but only feeding
it once and a while when you "get time"

Change the oil regulary and enjoy extended engine life!

Justin, Ive never has an oil filter leak on any of my 50s antiques or
any power equipment. 3 months on a filter is pure bull. OP was talking
2300 miles, not 10-15000.

I agree with the sentiment of your post, however the poster was saying the
car does as little as 300 to 2000 kilos per year.
On that account wouldn't you extend the oil/filter change?

Valvoline Max-life is synthetic blend oil not full synthetic. Many car
manufacturers world wide now call for 15 or 20 thousand miles between oil
changes, and they fully warrent these engines for 100,000 miles. Scott

Zonie, who says 15-20000 miles and give a 100000 mile warranty, and what
oil is specified.

That is news to me. I drive about 4000 miles a year and change oil and
filter about every 6 months.

What are the consequences if the rubber gasket "malfunctions"? A slight
oil leak? Seems changing the oil and filter every 3 months only because
the rubber gasket on the filter may "not function properly" is not an very
economic decision.
