Speedometer noise

I have a 1988 Honda Prelude that has noise coming out of the speedometer
that sounds like brake noise. It is erratic and sometimes almost goes
away but then it comes back. Has anyone had this problem or know of a
simple solution?

Speedo cable needs lubricating or replacing?

__If__ it has a speedo cable, use graphite, preferably in an aerosol
form. It's worse on cold days?
