I think you're over-****yzing. If you're an enemy jet, why would you bother
coming in on approach? If you're an enemy jet close enough for the
controller to visually identify whether your gear is down, you're close
enough to be identified as an enemy jet. If you're a terrorist in a
military-class jet, you're about to hit the wrong target.

I think you're instructor's correct. It's a reminder to the pilot coming in
to verify 3 greens. Cheap insurance.

You're ****ysing too closely. When I got my PPL flying aeroclub 152s at
Scott AFB, Illinois in 1992, that was standard lingo then, and probably has
been for decades. Proper response is "gear down and locked". Every once in
a while we'd reply "gear down and welded"; sometimes it was appreciated,
other times not.

I've heard the same phraseology from controllers at civilian airports.

It just blows my mind when a V-tail goes in gear up. In any approach
configuration and attitude I've ever been in, my V35B absolutely will not
slow down to short final airspeed (<90mph) unless the gear is down. Short
of a system failure, I don't see how it happens so often. Go figure..

3 in the green, 3 in the green, 3 in the green, lather, rinse, repeat....

it is standard at mil towers to report "gear down" to the tower when
checking in.. if you don't.. he'll ask when he gives the appch/landing
clearance..
