Default Airstrips advice please

A client has asked my thoughts ( silly bugger)
on what benefit it would be to a shire airstrip
to spend considerable sums upgrading from a dirt strip
to a tarred strip with the attendant drainage ?
Strip already has pilot activated lighting and windsock
Strip already accepts Super King airs .

The area is about to have up to 6 additional mines begin within
a very short time.

Has an active and vibrant tourism aspect.
Basically what are the real benefits of having a strip that can accept up
to Fokker 50
weights and sizes . We already get the odd Herc and caribou.

One consideration is right near the LJR for Pearce
so obvious is something with sealed surface that in an emergency
could accept a hawk and PC9 that otherwise would not
have tar except road for 350 Km

Fly in fly out mine ops are also a factor
as in the spare parts weights .

Should it be extended to accept F28 Bae 146 size
or is that overkill ?

The groups thoughts are appreciated.
Located 350 K's NE of Perth WA.

Cheers

Had been wondering along similar lines myself, Phil.

What are the approx dimensions of the current strip ?

Does anybody have any stats as to how often the strip is graded per year ?
How often is it closed due to a washed out / rough surface ?

How can we make this Mark Latham's fault ?

Should be an interesting discussion.

Cheers

Dirt strips are generally unusable for a day or 2 or 3
after rain/showers.
(depends a lot on how sticky the local dirt is)

Asking about sealing it although with ground temps
on tar 55 C+ THAT may get sticky

I figure if we engineer in a political component, the discussion won't
wander off into uncharted territory. ;-)

Phil the arbitrating factor I would have thought is whether the
aircraft servicing it are seeing prop damage due to stones on the
surface. if they arent then there is not much use hotmixing the strip.

10 years of running up and down with a grader is probably buckets
cheaper than sealing the surface.

btw one option if there is some damage is just to seal the end thirds
but with the start up costs of getting the bitumen gear up there there
mey be no realistic surfacing option than the full surface.

ask the existing pilots and their company managers what they think.

btw with what it will cost (quarter of a mil is realistic) I'd wait
until the 6 extra mines were up and running and pass the hat around to
share the costs.

So it is about to get a hammering, and will need a step up in work
to maintain current condition.

What are the costs of a mine being down for 24-48 hrs waiting for
`stuff'? Being able to pop in a plane from overseas direct without
having to offload and re-load in Perth, plus being able to get in
today, rather than waiting for several days for the stip to dry would
be the pluses.

The folks at Cunderdin would be the best to talk to I think.

Don't seal that strip, build a new one at Badgery's Creek. Better still,

For that you need an international airport, complete with customs and
immigration etc.
