David Hookes' Gift
I see that David Hookes' family has decided to establish a Foundation to
support organ donation. Seems like 10 others benefitted from his
willingness, and the support of his family, to donate his organs once it
was established that he was too far gone to need them any more
..
I think its amazing that the tough sun-bronzed Aussie image is shown up
to be somewhat of a facade when it comes to organ donation- we have one
of the lowest rates in the world, although apparently many of the
potential donors' wishes are frustrated by their next-of-kin. Maybe its
just that we tough guys don't like to talk about such things.
And yes, in case you are wondering, my license is endorsed, and my
family know what I want them to do.
But if its my kidneys you're after, well you'll have to speak to my
brother's next of kin- because I've been using one I borrowed from him
for the last 12 years..... (He insists that I keep it well flushed- only
too pleased to oblige....)
And to bring this back on topic- none of you would have been reading any
"Adventures of Dorothy" if it hadn't been for my brother's courage- no
way would I have been fit enough to fly aeroplanes if it hadn't been for
his kidney donation. (He's very much alive and kicking, by the way- last
seen touring Tassie in his 4wd and caravan...)
So how about it folks? Don't take your organs to heaven, eh?.....
By the way- I've been trying to figure how Hookesy managed to benefit 10
people: I calculate 2 corneas, 2 kidneys, 2 lungs, one heart, one liver,
and maybe one pancreas, but I can't work out the last one... or can the
liver be subdivided....?
