Copter crash toll five, probe ordered

Shrinagar, Aug 5 (PTI) - The toll in the helicopter crash
near here earlier today has gone up to five.

Five persons, including four Amarnath pilgrims, were
killed and one injured when a helicopter ferrying them
from holy cave shrine crashed about 10 minutes before it
was to land, apparently after hitting a tree on a hilltop
in Gandarbal, 30 km from here.

Among the dead were the pilot J S Kahlon of the State-
owned six-seater BEL 407 and a woman pilgrim.

Ajay Bindal, a pilgrim from Delhi who received multiple
fractures, has been admitted to the Sher-e-Kashmir
Institute of Medical Sciences, officials said.

The State Government has ordered an inquiry into the
mishap which occurred around 7.30 a.m., Inspector-General
of Police K Rajendra Kumar said.

He said the chopper, which was to land at Nehru helipad
here, was flying low and apparently hit a tree on a
hilltop and crashed.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Mohammad Amin Shah
said the weather was foggy around the time of the crash.

While three pilgrims and the pilot died on the spot, the
women devotee was declared brought dead by doctors at the
hospital.
