Default First Electric (?) helicopter

Hello:

I am interested in purchasing my first RC
Helicopter. For the past several months I have
been practicing with a simulator now I'd like to
buy. What would you more experienced flyers
recommend? Is electric even the best approach
or would as powered be better?

Thanks,Steve

I think gas power will always be better. Heavier helicopters are more
stable, especially in wind. IMHO

Hi,

I've got 2 IC helis and 2 Piccolo's (mini indoor electric heli), and I think
the powered ones ae far easier to learn on, and to be honest, just as cheap
(once you start adding the necessary upgrades onto the Piccolo).

The thing about the electric ones is that you will need a few batteries to
give you a continuous flight, which you're going to want to avoid
frustration. Also the IC ones have much more power unless you spend lots of
money on a brushless setup etc.

If you do go electric, then I suggest one of the larger ones like the Robbe
Eolo or Logo 10 (or bigger), but you'll soon see that the cost is just as
great (if not greater).

If you go the IC route, then you won't go far wrong with a Raptor 30 or 50 -
they fly great, parts are cheap and readily available, and there's loads of
info on the net about them.

Cheers,

Darren

Hi guys,

Yeah, I'm wondering why people assume that when someone asks about
electrics, they are thinking about a micro-heli.

Another thing is the "historical reference" to electrics being lighter
and more susceptible to buffeting from winds. After all, an 8-1/2 pound,
".45-sized" electric LOGO 20 weighs "just about" the same as an 8-1/2
pound, .45-sized Raptor 50 They both swing 600 mm blades too.

I've gone the electric route (they "made me" fly a glow ship once last
year, LOL) and don't feel handicapped in any way. In fact, not having to
learn about heli engine setup (even though I was already an experienced
glow A/C flier) made it easier for me as I live in a remote location and
learned on my own. The smooth reliable operation of my LOGO 20 helped me
have a very successful first season with over 200 6-minute flights
before my Telebee gyro crapped out.

The LOGO 10 is a great flying heli for its smallish "almost .30 size"
stature and it also makes a great beginners heli. Stop by my site,
logoheli.com and go to the forum, where there's a small community of
folks quite happy with their electric heli's!

Not to mention that electrics are much quieter! They also don't
auto-rotation when they loose power. Set up is much less work too!

They do if you put an auto-rotation hub in.

That was a little confusing, but what I think he meant was that they
don't regularly quit and force you to do autorotations unless you want
to....

I love doing autorotations, especially on my LOGO 10 (now that I learned
how). I cut the motor right off, so all you hear is the blades sounds,
then spool 'er up and take off and climb up for another one. No fuss, no
muss, no smoke, no noise from an idling motor to detract from the blade
sounds and quiet workings of the mechanics - a nice effect.
