Default NiMHs are crap, don't buy em!

Just wanted to share that little gem with you, a 1300 NiMH pack I got for my
Zagi has given up the ghost after only a few months' light use, and two
3000NiMH packs I have require so much forward planning (i.e. you need to
cycle, charge em, and use em within a few hours of coming off charge for
them to deliver any real current) they are practically unworkable. Back to
the short but brutish power of Nicads and the hi-grunt smell and mess of
slimers I reckon!

Natural Phil - You'll probably sing the praises of Lithiums, i'm letting you
test em out thoroughly on my behalf before I fork out on that one!

Hmmm, a bad workman blames his tools!

I have used NiMHs for ages and they work fine. Funnily enuf, I have lots
of mates who find the same!

As for Li cerlls, they are alkso very, very good.

Can we get some info as to how everyone is charging them - the lovers and
the haters?

I leave them half charged, then charge fully before using then after use
leave for at lest 12 hours before half charging them again

It is a right pain but the extra 50% of power is well worth it.

What are you using to charge them? That can make a huge difference in
lifespan.

my

you

My pennyworth.
I don't have a problem with NiMH batteries provided I have charged them.
Question one are you sure they're fully charged ?
Question two how have you charged them ? Even on a fast charge the rate
should only be 1.5 max ! otherwise toasted bats

Good point, i've just been out in the shed looking into this one, came about
because i've got a new NiCd on order and I want to make sure it is 'made'
properly on its first charge, so I started measuring voltages and currents.

I'm using a Pro-peak multi plus 12, it's got peak detect, an ammeter but
otherwise pretty basic, and
I thought it was ok. I generally do around 6 fast charges to one trickle,
trickled at 0.1C (130mA) and fast charged at 1C (1.3A). The pack in question
is an 8-cell 1300mAh NiMh.

I'm a little green once we get past this level of theory. The unloaded
voltage of the charger is measured at about 25v, loaded with the pack it
goes down to 10v, just above the 9.6v pack voltage.

This all seems ok to me unless anyone can spot any blinders.

Another question though - i've ordered a 800AR to replace this pack,
presumably this pack will need to be charged at 80mA to begin with, trouble
is the lowest trickle my charger can provide is about 110mA, any ideas how
to overcome this? In the early days I already killed at 500AR by leaving it
on trickle at 110mA for 10 hours a few times, thinking a trickle would
indeed be a trickle.

Thanks,

MDJ

I believe so, on a fast charge it keeps going on 1-1.3 for 1-1.5 hours,
maybe a little more, until today however when it false-peaked for the first
time

Aware of this, that's another thing about NiMhs that's enfuriating!!

I charge mine on c1.5 - 2.5 amps depending on the rush I am in. I prefer
1.5 amps. I NEVER charge above 2.5 amps. Ever.

I use an astro 110d charger. cost the dogs nuts a few years ago, but a bit
dated now. It is peak detect.
