Default Profilm/Solarfilm covering iron

The second, successive heat tacking iron I have bought is now going home.
Can any one recommend a high quality, branded iron for this job? My main
complaints are that the teflon coating wears off in five minutes ( well
maybe a bit longer than that), the metal plate on the back of the iron
carrying the regulation heat markings curls up, the wooden handle constantly
becomes loose until it is epoxied in place - is that enough for now? I have
to buy mail order where I live and do not mind at all paying for what is a
durable, quality iron. That is why a recommendion is sought - I can't go
look and touch some alternatives.

I have exactly the same problem; I bought a new iron in the summer and after
covering 2 models the teflon has started to wear through. Where I live,
these things aren't cheap.

I never use the iron bare like that. Use old baby socks (all cotton) on
them and you will get better covering jobs. Less scratches and dents in the
wood.

I have two irons that I have had for well over 10 years. A Royal and a Top
Flight. Both have covered dozens of planes without any problems.

Don't have any old babies! I do have (and use) something similar sold by
Topflite (I think) for the purpose, but it's still losing teflon.

I'm still using my sister's old iron that she left at home and I recycled it
some 20 plus years ago. With practise it works and hasn't let me down.
(Until probably now).

Every tefln iron I have ever bought, invluding for shirts, and every
teflon frying pan, has suffered from this problem

Use stainless steel for shirts, and a sock for solarfilm.

The Coverite iron is the best I've ever used in 20 years. Thick Teflon
coating, solid construction, versatile-shaped surface, and a dialable
thermostat with "ready" light.
