Default What's in a gyro?

I'm curious as to how a heli gyro works. Has anyone taken one apart?
Several are referred to as peizo gyros. What does the peizo do?

I know what the basic gyro theory is, but I'm more interested in the
actual construction and functioning. Is it just a spinning gyro with
a pair of peizo crystals to hold the arbor in place and detect lateral
forces due to changes in orientation?

How old are you?
(I'm guessing about 103)

It's not actually a gyro, it's an accelerometer.
All they do is detect acceleration (heli "gyro's" are set up to detect
lateral acceleration but it'll work in any orientation)

Half that - but I'm curious why you'd think so.

My apologies for the poor joke Mike.
It comes from the belief that mechanical things can be reduced in size
efficiently rather than replaced by electronic doo daa's which do the same
thing but in a completely different fashion.

Like my granny who is firmly convinced that my son's MP3 player actually
contains very very smal "lp's"
(she never having moved onto cd's)

Like I said, poor joke, you have my apologies.
