Default 98 Malibu AC problem

Has anyone had to replace the A/C button control in there Malibu and if so
did you get cheap parts. The service dealership said over $300 to fix it.
Thanks.

I am assuming that you have the typical Malibu problem of the blower
motor not working speed 1 and 2. If this is the case its a cheap fix.
All you need to do is to replace the blower motor resistor, a $20 part.
It takes a few minutes to do in the driveway. Check the net there are
lots instructions on how to fix this. Don't believe everything the
rip-off off dealers tell you!!!

Well there actually is ANOTHER very common AC problem with the malibus. The
AC light will blink on and off intermittantly and the AC will go on and off
with it. They usually replace the whole control panel. I've never heard of
anyone able to get and replace just the button. One person said he took it
apart and cleaned everything really good and it started working again. The
replaced my entire panel.

I'm not sure everyone is talking about the same problem. I think the
original post was about the A/C button, not the fan control switch. Are
these two problems related somehow?

Thanks,
Harry

Default 98 Malibu AC problem

I have a 1998 POS Malibu and I have ahd both of the problems mentioned in
this group. The fan wouldn't work at speeds 1 and 2 (Control module
replaced, $2000 parts and labour) and now my AC cuts in and out while I'm
driving.

Before I have my system recharged, is there a common solution to this
(apparently) common problem?

I was able to find a replacement control panel at a salvage yard for a lot
less than they wanted at the dealer.

I had something like that. The A/C unit kept going off, on, off, on all by
itself. It was easy to notice this because it happened during a heat wave. I
went looking for the work order and here is what the work order reads like:
Cause: Road tested and fault occurs. Over bump A/C shuts off. Check
connections at control head OK. Internal fault.
Correction: Replaced A/C control head and road tested OK.
The technician did explain the problem to me when I picked up the car and it
did not sound anything like a short to me. If memory serves me correctly the
coolant had to be removed from the A/C unit so the unit could be repaired.
This is the only time the A/C unit gave me problems.
Hope this is helpful.
P.S. Cars are expensive to maintain. Some more than others. The extended
warranty helps alot and the great service that I have had from the
dealership.

Thanks for the feedback, My problem was solved by buying another A/C
control unit at a salvage lot. It cost me $40 dollars and a friend of mine
took it out and put the new one. Now the A/C doesn't go on and off. The
technician wanted to charge me $250 dlls., I'm glad I didn't return with
him. It's a shame how mechanics try to take advantage of you.
