Default 98 Malibu electrical problems

I went to start my 98 Malibu the other day and found that my battery was
dead. I got a jump and when I turned the key the car would only run for
about 2 seconds, then die. I noticed when I was attempting to start it
again that all of the gauges jumped, then dropped and have stopped
working. I got the car started and drove around the block before the car
died again. I got it in the garage and charged the battery. Now, the car
will start, but only run for about a second and all of the gauges are
DEAD. (Non digital). I checked all of the fuses and they are fine. I
also check the relays and as far as I can tell, they look fine. Anyone
have any ideas? Car will start, but only runs for a second and gauges do
not work. The gas gauge is actually past the full point and pointing
strait down! Any ideas?

Check your alternator. I'd bet money its bad! You are lucky if thats your
original alternator and you have not had to replace it until now. All of the
signs of whats happening to you are very similar to what happened to me when
mine went out.

Thanks! I actually had the alternator go out already once and had it
fixed. I am lucky that it has a lifetime warranty on it. I will take it
off the car and back to the people who "fixed" it the first time and have
it checked. Thanks!

You might want another opinion since I'm not a mechanic or anything but it
would be easy for you to take off the alternator and have it checked. One
thing I found out about the Malibu is when the Alternator goes, even if you
are driving your car, it will eventually die. It can't run off the battery
very long. My car was doing really weird things. All my dash lights were
flashing on and off and even my tail lots were doing funny stuff. Mine
lasted about 50,000 miles.

you probably need to relearn the passlock system.....try to start the engine
and leave key on for 10 minutes cycle key then it will start.....make sure
the security light goes out after 10 mintes

If it was a passlock issue the car wouldnt even start...You need to
pull codes...Sounds to me like one of two things a bad ground or you
Body control module is bad real common...For it to be both....The best
thing s to pull the codes from the BCM then see if your getting B codes
which is from you BCM or i you getting U codes which means a module has
lost communication...Your bcm will cause a drain on your battery...If it
has a short in it..But to be honest we will be chasin our own tais
unless we get some codes...

yes the car will start for 2 seconds because it doesnt see the correct
values from the passlock ....you need a scan tool.....that was a prime year
for ignition switch problems also.....you can check for ignition voltage on
ing 1 through 3 and see if they are present.....usaually ing 3 will not be
present if it is a ignition switch problem....you will also have problems
with some of your accessories like windows blower motor radio.....and
sometime transmission indicator will not show up

Top Post..
Ok there is a problem....And if the BCM has a problem like a Class 2
loss of comunication the pass lock will disable the fuel injectors....My
point being is it is not just a passlock issue..Im looking more to the
BCM ...LOL man we can sit here all day and do this but with out the
codes ..
Were just pissin in the wind...A pass lock issue will not stop IPC
function But a bad ignition switch will...But lke i said before we need
codes..

Default 98 Malibu Electrical Problems

I am still having problems with my Malibu. I had the alternator replaced,
which was bad, but when I try and start the car, it does some funny
things. First, the car gauges don't work and the car will start for a few
seconds then die. If I keep turning the key on and off, the gauges will
suddenly work, the lights come on and the car will start. I drove around
awhile and then the gauges went dead, but the car still ran. When I
turned the car off and then tried to restart it, the same thing would
happen. It runs fine for awhile if I turn the key on and off until the
lights and gauges turn on, but soon after, the gauges stop working. I
noticed after I get it running that the first gauge to stop working is the
gas gauge. Could this be the key switch? I don't know because if the
gauges and lights are not on, the car will only run for a few seconds.
When I do get the car to start, the gauges work fine for awhile, then they
all go dead, but the car keeps running. STRANGE PROBLEM! The alternator
was replaced and is working fine. Anyone have any more ideas???
