Default Broken Front Coil Spring

Does anyone know of any unannounced recalls from GM for the 1998 Malibu
Front Coil Springs. The coil spring on my Malibu broke, (the car was being
shifted into reverse from park), and then the end of the spring punctured
the tire, this was on the drivers side. I have read that corrosion from
road salts in the Northeast can corrode the coil springs over time, there
was a recall on the 1998 Mazda for this problem.
Thanks.

I don't know about Mazda, but I know Subaru had a recall for a similar
problem. Their "fix" was to install shield that would protect the tire when
(not "if") the spring broke.

 Same thing happen to my wifeís car this morning. 99í Olds,
65k backing out of the drive way and snap. Good thing we werenít on
the highway, seems odd given the miles we have on the car. We live in
a hilly city and have some bad roads. $500 for new springs, tow and
front allignment.

The mechanic said this a fairly common problem "some" GM cars, but
admitted it certainly doesnít help when you have a lot bad roads in
the area. keeps them busy with brakes, transmissions, clutches, front
suspension work

I have a 1998 Malibu and had the left front coil spring break in 2003
and had the right front coil spring break last week. When the car was
up on the hoist the mechanic noticed that the left back coil spring
was also broken. I had them replace all the coil spring and the
struts. I have not heard of other cars with the frequency of broken
coil springs. I am going to contact General Motors to see if they
will do anything about the problem (and expense) I have encountered.
