Read your owners manual, mine says check your tire pressure once a month or
more.

I had that happen due to air leaking around the base of the rubber
valve stem.

I help maintain a fleet of vehicles that have more steels wheels than
alloy wheels. The alloy wheels ALWAYS give us more bead leak trouble
than steel wheels. Corrosion is more likely on alloy wheels than rust
on steel wheels concerning the bead. Generaly speaking, this occurs on
vehicles 5 years or older.

Many bead leaks can only be detected once you air them to 50 psi or
more if soap testing or putting the tire/wheel under water.

YEP! How many people actually read them, let alone remember what it said.
Tires DO loose air slowly. If you have your tired filled with Nitrogen
instead, the Air pressure will stay up for longer because the Nitrogen
Moduals are Larger then Oxygen. Costco for example will fill your tires
with Nitrogen. I think it's just a waste. On Simi's, Fine for use on the
Retreads, Tires hold up better, not Deteriorate as fast. On a Car tire,
your not going to Retread them, just toss them and get a new set.

What nitrogen also does is reduce the amount of corrosion to the rims when
the heating and cooling of the gas in the tire occurs when driving then
parking over night. Less condensation is produced with nitrogen.

If the shop using plain old compressed air has a decent dryer on the system
then its almost as dry as nitrogen.

That's true, but air is 78% nitrogen and 22% oxygen. When driving the air in
your tire heats up, and then when it cools down it creates water from
condensation caused by the expansion and contraction of the oxygen. Since
nitrogen is only 0.2% oxygen there is no condensation, no water to create
rust or corrosion.

did he air them up to about 50? Did he take the wheel off the car and
put it in a water tank and carefully look for bubbles? My guess is no,
usually we just look at the tread to try and find a nail or something,
and usually you do find something.... and check the valve stem with
soapy water......If you dont see anything that way, it helps to over
inflate a bit then dunk it in water......when I did alot of tires I had
a spray bottle with soap I used to find the leak. I would raise the car
(A lift is nice and look for anything to spray. If all else fails take
it off to dunk. I would suspect most people would look and if they didnt
see anything they will tell you "I cant find anything, watch the pressure."
