Default 1989 Corvette flywheel ( 6 speed transmission)

Has anyone ever had to replace a flywheel on an '89 vette with a 6-speed
transmission. The local transmission shop quoted me $1300. just for the
flywheel. Seems to me there should be a less expensive alternative that would
work. Would appreciate any ideas you would have.

It has to do with the dual mass flywheel that is used with the six-speed
transmission. If you use a regular flywheel, there gets to be some bad
vibrations and noise. To me, that just seems wrong as parts that spin
should be in balance. If you have transmission shafts that are out of
balanced, then how does a flywheel that decouples and recouples at various
physical locations (every time you engage and disengage the clutch) as there
is no way to keep a single relationship in the position of the flywheel and
the moving parts in the transmission.

Do you mean $1300 just for part and not including labor -- that's kind
of high -- get a second opinion. A dual mass flywheel does cost more
than double the cost of a regular flywheel, but probably not $1300.
Also if you have a convertible, they may charge you slightly more
labor because of R & R of the x-brace. Doing that clutch job is a
real pain in the ass -- not at all like doing a clutch in a '68
Camaro.

I had the clutch replaced on my '93 by the local Chevy dealer for under
$500, but that's because the transmission was already out. The dealer,
testing for a different problem, had lunched my transmission. They somehow
got it stuck in 3d gear. So I'm sure the clutch replacement would have cost
a lot more if the dealer hadn't had to pick up all the costs related to the
transmission. BTW, I'd have to check the invoice, but I believe they
resurfaced the flywheel while they were doing all this other stuff.

Can a dual mass flywheel be resurfaced?

I replaced my dual mass with a single mass one. I believe the part came from
an older model Camaro or from a 4+3 Manual Transmission from a 88 standard
transmission.(?) Reducing the weight of the flywheel is an old hotrod
trick. Rotating mass costs HP therefore any reduction in the weight of the
increases the rear wheel HP. I got mine from Callaway Corvette, originally
designed for the Sledgehammer. It is cheaper and the motor revs much
quicker. Not as quick as an aluminum one but much more streetable. I also
changed to a Centerforce Dual Friction clutch which I think is much better
than stock and costs they same or less than a stock set up. I can't tell any
difference in the drivability either. The last CF clutch lasted about 40k
which was about the same as my stock clutch did and it will handle as much
as 600 HP!

Hey, this is a dynamite solution if it doesn't tear up the
ZF tranmissions. (and 40K sounds like a good test.) The
story I've heard is that ZF "demanded" this flywheel on
the C4 to soak up engine firing impulses that were
causing their 6-speed to "rattle." The shop manual on
the '89 clutch sort of goes along with this story (without
talking about the politics from the Germans). No one
I've talked to seems to know if the gear rattle was a
legitimate serviceability-concern or just Kraut fussiness.

How's the gear rattle with that one piece flywheel?

How about the CF clutch disk -- are there torsional
damper springs around it that could be absorbing those
ugly American V-8 firing impulses??

I checked the invoice, and the dealer outsourced that part of the job. I'll
call their service tech and see who actually did it, try to call them and
get details.

Just curios, I didn't think there was enough meat to do a resurface, sort of
like the disks in our disk brakes today. That may be some more of the "we
have it perfect so don't touch it" German engineering.
