On the Pre 1981 that started the 17-character VIN number, there is no one
source for info. Finding out what a old VIN stands for as far as engine, build location is easy. Finding the cars history is not so easy and vary's from state to state. Basically the major sources of info are: State DMV's Insurance companies Looking at webgroups like C1/C2/C3 Registery State/County Registrations Auto Auctions Local Inspection Centers Manufacturers Police Accident Records (selected states only) Sometimes, but rare http://www.google.com/ will pull up info. Insurance companies seem to have the best access to the many places to look (AAA and Progressive have found alot of older car info for me) I would say 95% of the internet sites that sell the packages about finding out anything about anyone are total rip-offs, but have heard a few are pretty good at finding old car info (not suree which ones) Long and short of it, unless you get a court order plus a detective, hard to find out much on pre 81's -- Tedd Riggs Redmond, WA 1998 C5 6 spd |
