I was given this cigar to try by my favorite local tobacconist (Pipe World).
I brought it home and let is rest in my humidor for a bout a week before
burning it up.
While it rested, I checked up on the cigar. I couldn't find this particular
size in their line up, so I am assuming this must be a "sampler" produced by
them. The nearest thing listed is the "Grand Dame" size, at 5x35.
It looks like a well built cigar, with clean tight seams and minimal
veining. It also has what looks like a triple cap. ;-) It was smooth and
fairly firm. The band slid off easily before lighting. Close inspection of
the wrapper leaf showed a few tiny sparkles here and there, and very little
tooth.
It clipped cleanly, and left no loose crumbs falling into my mouth. A few
pre-light draws revealed almost no flavors, but the draw was very easy, with
minimal resistance. I warmed it gently with my torch, and then lit it
carefully. Despite my careful treatment, the first few puffs were slightly
bitter, but there was also a pronounced flavor that said "Dominican"
Once underway, this smoke produced huge clouds of smoke. The predominant
taste was an strong tobacco earthiness, and a mild bitterness. The
bitterness wasn't strong enough to be unpleasant, just enough to make itself
known. I believe I could detect the Brazilian tobacco, too, but the
overriding characteristics of the flavor profile were Dominican tobacco. I
didn't find the taste to be particularly complex.
The ash mottled dark gray, smooth and firm, and fell off cleanly and easily
in 3/4" chunks. Because of the easy draw and narrow RG, I was very careful
not to over-puff. It burned pretty cool until the end. When I got down to
the last inch and a half, it started to burn a little hot, despite my care,
and the nicotine started to make my lips tingle. Despite it's small size,
this thing packed a pretty good amount of nicotine.
Overall, I was not terribly impressed. They want $12-$15 each for these
smokes, and IMHO, they are not worth it. They would be a decent enough $3-$4
cigar. I would say put this one down, and pick up 3 or 4 of your favorites
instead.
