Default A Newbie Seeks opinions on Humidor (cigars humidor)

Hi, I've lurked here on and off for a year or so now. It seems there
are a few helpful folks around here. What I'm wondering is, does
anyone have any experience of the Ravello humidor? It's supposed to
hold about 300 cigars, and appears to be quite good value for money.
Is there a catch, or is it worth buying?

Thanks in advance.

You're probably going to get this response from a lot of people, but if you
need a humidor that size, unless you really want the look of a humidor, then
you oughtta just go ahead with a Coolerdor. It's going to be much cheaper
than the humi you're looking at, and it'll hold more.

A lot of the large igloo coolers ( http://tinyurl.com/revr ) have a 'quick
hatch' for access. If you stand it up so that it opens like a fridge, you
can put your commonly smoked sticks near that hatch, so you have to only
open it instead of opening the whole thing.

Coolerdors are easy to build, and if you do it right, they can look pretty
nice too. I have one that's fully lined inside with Spanish Cedar, and my
wife is working on (something that she won't tell me) for the outside of it,
because she's tired of looking at a cooler.

Now as for your real question, the Ravello humi is nice, and if you want the
'look' of a display humidor, then it should serve you well.

A you've probably already picked up from lurking, "300 count" is a
marketing term used to mean "about 150 cigars, maybe 180, if they're
small, and you cram them in there."

Other than that, only you can determine if it's "worth it"; I have no
direct experience with that unit.

I'm a newbie here and I have a 150 count Humidor in my living room. I
am currently going thru the process of making a coolerdor for my
office(computer room) and stocking up on sticks....I will keep the
ones I want to smoke and my ISOMs in the humidor and the rest for the
coolerdor to rest....Thats my plan and I have saved alot of $$$ doing
it this way. I went on Ebay and got a humidor for about $40-50 and I
have never had a problem with it, with this hobby start small and work
your way up, I know its very easy to spend money on things that look
or seem nice but you really don't need it right now. Hope this helps

I think expensive humidors are way overrated. I have two plastic bins, a cheap
mahogany humidor humidified with an espresso cup half full of water, and a
Daniel Marshall Ambiente, and they all work. I had a brief mold problem with
one bin, but I think that was because it was too warm and had too many
overly-humidified smokes in it.

I think the best reason for buying a pricey humidor is to get something
well-made that will look good on your desk. The Ambiente is a beautiful box.

I assume the one you are talking about is the same on that's been
going by at least a dozen different names on the 'net ...and for
anywhere from $129-$279 or more.

Nice shiny finish, top tray, dividers, two humidification devices, a
hygro in the middle ...and a couple drawers at the bottom for
accessories ...kinda like this one here:

If that's the puppy you're talking about ...it's well worth the money.

I've got one, Misc has one ...and we both attest to its ability to
maintain a rock-solid RH (if not used as your "everyday" humi).

Actually, I use is as my almost every day humi (it's my gift-idor, I've
been the lucky recipient of far too much ASC generosity -- THANKS,
EVERYONE! , and it's still rock-solid. I think the key is keeping the
humi mostly full.

You've got one, Misc has one, and so does Alex. It's pretty
decent, but it certainly does not take 300 cigars. Not
unless you really love the Short Story....

One problem I did have was that the bricks in the lid had a
tendency to fall off when the lid was shut. The first time
this happened, I didn't notice for a fortnight and grew a
lovely crop of mould on a pair of Monte A's.

Oh, and shopping around does pay, as I found out after the
fact. I paid over $300 for it -- an expensive remind that
comparison-shopping is a Very Good Thing (TM).

<snip>

Thanks to everyone who replied. I think I'll go ahead and order one.
You lot weren't wrong about the Fonseca KDTs, so how could you be
wrong about this?

Cheers!
