To begin with, the VSG stands for Virgin Sun Grown. What this means is
that while the original Ashton uses a Connecticut shade wrapper, this one is grown in the sun. I'm aware that some wrappers besides the Connecticut are grown in the shade but the majority of the time I would classify all non-Connecticut wrappers as Sun Grown. The Virgin part comes from the fact that the original creation came from a farm that had not produced tobacco before. I would therefore say that Ashton Cabinet VSG produced after the first year are 'virgin' to the extent that all brides are assumed to be virgin unless proved otherwise regardless of appearances. So what's up with the Virgin Sun Grown? Read 'marketing'. It's just a name to distinguish this cigar from other fine Ashton cigars. Actually, Robert Levin, the president of Holt's Cigar Company who imports the Ashton line, had wanted to call them the Ashton Crowns but there were too many 'Crowns' on the market already hence Virgin Sun Grown. http://cigars.about.com/library/weekly/aa120702a.htm -- TimL |
