Hi all,

Today, I phoned the British Customs & Excise advice line for importing into
the UK because I'm thinking of buying a Bob Staebell Humidor from the US.
)

My humidor will cost 2.2% import duty on the cost PLUS SHIPPING. Then I'll
be hit by the lovely British 17.5% VAT on top of the entire total! That
means an effective tax rate of 20%. That's not good...

Oh well... at least I'm not importing cigars... that would cost me £140.10
per Kilogram in duties PLUS 26% import tax PLUS 17.5% VAT on top of that.
Before anyone lambastes me for being ridiculous, it *IS* accurate... I asked

Why not buy the humidor next time you're in NYC and take it
home with you as "used goods"? That way, it won't attract
either VAT or import duty.

Alternatively, you could always ask an American of your
trust to act as the recipient of the humidor and then,
suitably repackaged, to mail it on to you. But that would
be tax evasion and illegal, so you mustn't do it -- Gordon
Brown would be displeased with you....
