Default Cubans, What's The Deal?

Hey MO, and the rest of you aficionados, what's going on? Why have things
changed so dramatically? The Partagas Serie D No4 I just smoked the other day
was a damn fine smoke, but it wasn't anything like the old ones. Seems like
everything is topsy turvey. Monte taste like Ramon, Partagas like Upmann, etc,
etc, etc. Sandy

No aficionado here, but I also have noticed a trend toward less
difference between the different lines. I've heard that it is the
influence of Altadis, and their effort to standardize production. I've
also heard that some of the original blends are no longer available.

With one factory rolling multiple brands it's clear to me how quality
control and blending can be manipulated due to leaf on hand.

The PD4 I got from Wal 2 years ago, really was terrific in its own right, but
it didn't taste anything like the old D4, which is a damn shame. Maybe the
generations aren't upholding tradition any longer over there. Just like here in
the US where quality manufacturing is long gone. Sandy

Save for a few vitolas still produced as they should, nowadays Cuban cigars
only differ by their band and brand.

Furthermore, most ligas have been modified and lean towards the mild side of the spectrum

Altadis is killing the Cuban cigar industry.

I think this is especially true with certain cigars. However certain
characteristics still prevail in the H. Upmann Monarch or Conn #1, the
H. Upmann Sir Winston, the Partagas Lucy and the Cohiba Esplendido or
Cohiba corona especiale, and the Cuaba.

If not too labor intensive, could someone list the Altadis influenced
(alleged generic) brands? Is the answer all but those listed above?

Maybe the rest of the non-Cuban brands are improving to the point where the
difference in quality and taste are not so pronounced? That's kind of my
theory. I have cut way back on my purchase and consumption of Cuban cigars
because I just haven't been terribly impressed of late with Cubans. Don't
get me wrong -- the best cigars I ever smoke still tend to be Cuban, like
the Partagas Lucy, Monty #2 and #4, and the RyJ Churchills. But more often
than not, I find myself reaching for non-Cubans now for special occasions.

With price hikes of 10% to 15% taking effect next month, I'm getting to the
point I can live without Cuban cigars. They're not that good.
