Lessons I learned today:

1. Chains do break, especially lightweight ones (not a hollow pin, though)
2. Always take a chain tool with you on rides...
3. ...especially when you're miles from home (thank God it wasn't a long
ride!)...
4. ...and its about to rain...
5. ...and no one's around to give you a ride home.
6. Seven miles is a LONG way to walk...
7. ...especially uphill...
8. ...in cycling shoes with cleats on the bottom.
9. Don Diego Aniversario is a good smoke after a miserable day! (can't
remember if Mickey or Hutch sent this, since I was cluster bombed by them
and Kevin at the same time, but thanks, whomever sent it!)

Damn those "10 Spd" chains.

Did you break a plate or pin?

CigarSki - been there, don't want to do it again...

The pin sheared off plate...the plate ended up all twisted up...couldn't
even try to jerry-rig it.

My feet still hurt from the walk!

Thanks for the tip Acey, I'll have to add the tool to my kit (it's in a
back corner of the tool box now). In my case, the wife would be really
pissed (we ride a tandem) if we had to take a long walk.

Jonathan-
One other thing that I thought wouldn't happen to me on a road bike is
a spoke break. I was slowly coming around a corner in a parking lot,
and it sounded like someone threw a rock at my rear wheel. Then came
the tire rub on the frame, etc. I couldn't move the wheel enough to
avoid causing damage to the chainstays. I don't carry any extra
spokes or spoke wrenches. But my most important tool is my cell
phone, and I always hope my wife, who is a cyclist and cigar smoker,
is around to take on the pit crew roll.
Warm regards,
David James

?! You're pulling my leg, right?

Or do you mean a BIKE-"bike", vice bicycle?

Misc "in which case: mine, too"

I've been bicycling for almost 20 years and have never had a chain break while
on a ride...oh shit, why did I say that.

I don't have one but then again it wouldn't do me any good because I wouldn't
know how to use it.
