In researching various causes of an upset stomach, I've seen smoking
listed as one of them. Does anybody know the reasons smoking would
upset the stomach since I doubt the smoke reaches the stomach?

There are other reasons for an upset stomach not directly connected to
ingestion.
Sailing can upset the stomach in some people and that doesn't happen
because they're drinking seawater.
As for smoking causing upset stomachs, I wouldn't really know.
I used to occasionally get heartburn from smoking - and I have certainly
felt nauseous from smoking too much in the first stages.
Cigarette smoke is quite acidic, maybe the acids in the tobacco smoke upsets
the stomach itself by ingestion through the bloodstream.
Interesting, though, I've never really questioned why smoking does make
people sick, or to be precise, the actual process involved.

Hello. While I understand people on both sides may have strong
opinions about whether smoking is the bane of everybody's existence or
whether it's their personal savior that gets them through the day, I
would appreciate a post that objectively and methodically explains why
smoking may cause an upset stomach. There are enough sources on the
internet which describes smoking as a cause of an upset stomach, but
no explanation as to exactly how it causes it. Thanks.

Vomiting and diarrhoea are often seen as an illness in themselves.
In other ways, they can also be seen as a cure- both are means the body has
of ejecting toxic substances from itself.
Normally, the body will do it's best to eject a harmful substance.However,
if you persist in putting that substance into the body by repeated exposure
to it(normally known as tolerance), it will eventually try to accommodate
the situation and the nauseous symptoms will subside.
Smokers do this when they train themselves to smoke.
Which of course means that the harmful substances being ingested are no
longer being ejected, and the body's ability to repair itself is
compromised.
If smokers abstain for a while, or try to quit, the body will again try to
clear itself and this might also be the reason why symptoms of upset stomach
are reported by people trying to quit, as well as smokers in the initial
stages of smoking.

That is the case for just about all claims about smoking causing anything
unpleasant. The exact mechanism appears to be statistics, mis-reading of.
This coupled with an epidemic of similar claims by doctors, researchers and
the media - none of whom have any kind of axe to grind of course - amounts
to the "vast body of evidence" you will come across with great frequency.

Are you a smoker that gets an upset stomach from smoking? If so, I
would suggest you dont smoke. If not, I wouldnt worry about it.
