I tried that tactic once and it was needlessly unkind. The gifter believes
that he did you a favor (which he did, as far as he knows) and expects some gratitude. Telling him the truth has two effects: It seems ungrateful and it alerts the gifter of his having been fooled. Neither are good. So I suggest you just thank him for his kindness and let it go at that.
