Accomplishment - I have smoked a MacArthur
OK, I had always wondered if these things were actually smokable or not, and
what they would be like. Last night I got the chance to try one myself
because we had a reject from the shop - one of the ones in stock had a
cracked shank. So, I yanked it off the wall, fixed the split with epoxy,
and kept it for myself. Last night was the first smoke. I filled it all
the way with C&D Bayou Night and settled in to watch all four hours (well,
it seemed that way) of the third "Matrix" movie. Fortunately my Old Boy's
flame nozzle can be cranked up to blowtorch length, or relights would have
been hopeless (I do have an Extend-a-Match, though). Tamping was more of an
issue, since none of my tampers would reach far enough into the bowl once
I'd smoked a good bit of it. I ended up hanging onto the very tiptop of my
Ming (my longest tamper) and poking around blindly. Very long nails would
be in order, methinks. However, it smoked great! The specific tobacco
seems to really zing with cobs for some reason, and the entire bowl smoked
down without bite nor gurgle. Also, I have to say it was extremely fun -
the long stem and huge bowl were just fun to relax with, and it smoked a
good bit better than many briars I have had. Plus, I think I have found the
perfect pipe to walk around town with...
