Default Alas, Babylon

Hello All,

I just got finished reading Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank. It is great
to read a book with references to pipe smoking. Two of the main
characters enjoy smoking the pipe at several points in the story. It
also seems to me that Sci-Fi writers 50 years ago seemed much more
intelligent then some of the writers today. Robert Heinlein has to be
my favorite writer but his stuff seems to me to be pertinent today. I
just thought this group would be interested in a book that put pipe
smoking in positive light.

Yes and Issac Azimov (sp) Poul Anderson, Arthur C. Clark, Andre Noreton,
Sprague DeCamp, Campbell, Ray Bradbury and many others. The Golden Age of
Science Fiction it seems also coincided with the Golden Age of Jazz of the
50's- 60s era. CW music as well I suppose. Hank Williams Kitty Wells et seq. I
suppose I was fortunate to have been born in 1940. Sometimes I think I'd like
to go back. I'd enjoy it more now I think. :-). Julian Bream came into his own
in the 60s rediscovering the Lute and using his resources to have them built
and commissioning music and trasnscriptions. (Or ws that in the 70s?)
Rubinstein and Horwitz were at their peak and touring extensively.

As a now fiddler, there was Joseph Szigeti, Henryk Szeryng, Nathan
Milstein (I studied a bit in one of his early master classes, but
never made it to the concert stage), not to mention Heifetz, Menuhin.
Paul Zukofsky hadn't come along yet. Yes, Golden Age of touring
maestros.

Correct me if I'm wrong, David, but wasn't Horowitz the son-in-law of
Rubenstein? I seen all of 'em as a child at Eastman Theatre
(Rochester, NY). I'm a bit behind ya, 12/41.

If you can access Yahoo and the "profiles", there's pic of me cira
'00, with my present instrument. handle there: ednandu

cheers, happys smokes, Ed Duncan, Batavia, NY

There was a family relationship between the two but my memory's fuzzy on the
details. I'll have to Google it. Well 09/40 and 12/41 are close enough :-) Then
Callas was in the 60s yes? Of course ! I distinctly remember her Madame
Butterfly ! I had the LP set. I wore the damn thing out.
