Aromatics
Throughout the course of 20 years of pipe smoking, I have encountered more
than a few aromatic blends, from wretched drugstore pouches to fine Lakeland
florals (though not, perhaps, aromatic in the American sense). Recently, I
have found a few that I could smoke in public, and not mind that I wasn't
smoking a tangy-sweet Virginia, or a stout, rich latakia blend. I have
never, not once, found a "crowd-pleasing" aromatic that inspired me to go
buy a tin because I really enjoyed it. Nope, not even Blue Note.
Well, I ordered two tins of Mac Baren Vanilla Cream. I started out early on
vanilla blends, but the ones I remembered were utterly cruel in my tongue.
This stuff I found, rich, sweet, crowd-pleasing, and possessing a rich
tobacco flavor. It isn't subtle, nor is it overpowering. I find it strikes a
good balance between the added flavors and the underlying richness of the
blended tobaccos.
I also ordered some Gemain's #7, because I see it everywhere in Germany, and
have been curious to try something from a blender I have come to trust for
delivering the goods. I'll report more on that later.
Best,
