Default Burley issue

Morning ASP!
WHen I smoke blends containing Burley I find that my mouth feels like it is
on fire. Obviously as a result I have stayed well away from anything
containing the stuff. But I was wondering how common this type of reaction
is to Burley or even other types of tobacco.
Cheers,
B.

Most blends contain burley, its mild flavor makes it a good filler
tobacco. Many blends that advertise the burley content as primary are
cube-cut, flake, rope or plug form. The cut can make a big difference
in how hot a blend appears to smoke. So does moisture content. I
smoke burley almost exclusively, and I think something else is causing
the problem aside from the burley itself. Of course there is always a
possibility of an individual allergy, but given the near-omnipresence
of burley as a filler, I think that's unlikely.

I think I've said somthing to this point in two other posts in the past 15
minutes, but burly mixes smoke cool and sweet in corncob pipes.

I've always had problems with straight buley until recently, when I
discovered a blend from McCranie's called Old Masters. It is primarily
ribbon cut burley with a little virginia. Very cool smoking and slightly
sweet. Burns to fine ash.
It is a bulk blend made by McClelland, who call it X10.

Give Esoterica Tilbury a try. Great stuff, full of flavor, no bite to
speak of. Also the way Samuel Gawith integrates Burley into its blends
takes the tobacco to a new level. Fantastic.

I always get that uncomfortable feeling with VA's. Burleys don't seem to
bother me very much. I smoke Edgeworth Slices as a regular and never get
bitten by it.

Smoke a pipe as long as you control when it gets smoked. When the pipe
calls out to you more than you call out to it, step away for a while. This
applies to all things. Live your life, don't live for the things in it.

In message news:RfydnTYuJ5e5Y8vcRVn-rw@rogers.com on 26 Sep 2004, Allan
Swartz said to all at alt.smokers.pipes

If it has a little virginia, is it really a straight burley?

Reminds me of the Seinfeld where Kramer's friend refers to his shirt by
saying, "It's 100% cotton. And some wool."

I have always enjoyed ribbon cut in my mixtures. It just seems to add a
different flavor.
