Default Cigar crossovers: Was:Re: Just curious...

Ken, I suspect that many here were or are ASC'ers. I've asked this same
question before, some time back, and the silence was deafening.

Me, I've never been to ASC.

Another interesting question would be how many of ASP'ers have made the
transition from cigars to pipes. I think that the numbers would be very high
with many current ASP'ers who have come to ASP in the past year or so having
recently made that transition. I see this every day with the emphasis here on
the tobacco portion and a lesser emphasis on the hardware (pipes) portion. With
the "mystical" nature of pipes it is much easier for the cigar guy to identify
with the tobacco portion as a cigar is tobacco, period. A crossover from
cigars can enjoy his tobacco in something as simple as a cob so the pipe aspect
need not necessarily come to the forefront and to a degree can be ignored, for
at least a while.

But, I think that over time the crossover person becomes more into the pipe
aspect realizing that the hobby can be about more than the enjoyment of
tobacco, and that there is the whole world of pipes to explore as well. That's
not to say that this is the way with every crossover, but it seems pretty
pre-dominant here on ASP. From what I have seen, over the years, coinciding
with the large crossover from cigars, there has been a definite shift in topics
discussed. Earlier, back a number of years, the emphasis was much more on
pipes. I think that today that has reversed. And again, the new pipe smoker
coming over from cigars understands tobacco, not necessarily pipes. Don't get
me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that, growth in the hobby is great. It
will be interesting to watch the growth of new pipe smokers and what come to
interest them.

Art, I have been a pipe smoker for 33 years now, and before I found ASP, I
was more intrigued by the hardware, but now that I have found so many great
tobaccos, I find the magic is in the tobacco and not the pipe. As for
cigars, I am not well versed enough to enjoy a great cigar. To me, a cigar
is just a cigar, but I could wax poetic on the differences of pipe tobaccos.
So, anyway, this is one non-cigar smoker who thinks it is "mostly" about the
tobacco and not the pipe.

I use to smoke both, now I prefer the pipe alone, I have not smoked a cigar
in over a year, but unknown to most around me, I add cigar leaf to most
aromatic blends I smoke. It is great for more body or boldness!I learned
this trick from Sailorman Jack.

On 10 Jul 2003 15:51:56 GMT,

I have. I'm down to one cigar every month or so. But a bowl just about every night.

This is because to me, a pipe is a tobacco combustion chamber, nothing
more. I have a couple that look nice, but the pipe I spent the most for
$21 for a "The Pipe", I never smoke.

The pipes can be horrifically expensive, but the tobacco is much cheaper than comperable cigars.

I don't see that happening to me. One of the reasons I took up pipe
smoking was threefold.

1) It was much less expensive than cigars.

2) There was much greater control over how much to smoke (you can pack a 5
minute pipe, but you have to throw away a cigar after 5 minutes).

3) There is a much more "diverse" selection of tobacco available.

Heck, I like to shift the conversation to politics )

I still smoke cigars nearly every day. I also smoke pipes nearly daily.
Sometimes different days, though... ;-)

I somewhat agree. I have a few pipes that I spent $50-$60 for (estate),
but in general, I look for $20-$30 estates. I have about 20 pipes now,
but only regularly smoke 8-10 of them.

The ones I don't smoke are ones that I have found imperfect for my
smoking style, which is hot and wet... ;-) Pipes that don't pass a
cleaner don't get much use. Pipes that seem to smoke overly hot don't
get much use. Pipes with holes above the bottom of the pipe don't get much use...

This is one of the biggies for me. I can get a tin of Haddos for the
price of 1 or 2 good cigars.

Don;t forget DGT. When I am working, I smoke pipes most of the time.
If I have to put it down and come back later, I can, without it tasting
like crap. Hell, a bowl of Haddos tastes better the next day! ;-)

While this is true, I have found myself pulled to only a few types. I
love Latakia blends, I love Haddos, and I love barbary coast. Many
others are just tried and ignored. But I still come back to all of them
at different times.

Plus, my wife LIKES the smell of pipes, and lets me smoke them in the
living room. Cigars are relegated to my office, which means no smoking
during things like movies, and other "wuality time" events...

:-)

Default Cigar crossovers: Adding cigar leaf? (HIJACK)

I like Robusto.

I really like rubusto when I add the clippings from my "cigar tin".

I keep all of the clipped heads in a tin on my desk. When I smoke
Robusto, I add a little robusto, a little cigar leaf, more robusto, more
cigar leaf, etc, to the bowl, then smoke it. I love the nuances.
Especially since I smoke a lot of different cigars. Cuban, Honduran,
Dominican, Nicaraguan, all mixed in with one of the Dark Lords
masterpieces. It is heavenly for me...

I probably shouldn't say this, Joe, because I don't want anyone else
to know about this ... :-) ... but old Kaywoodies make a terrific
smoke, and you can usually get 'em in that price range. I plan on
putting some info on the ASP Site about dating KW's, so people will
know generally what they're buying.

I have heard that, and keep it in mind, but right now, I am looking for
specific things.

Before I go building a serious rotation, I need a churchwarden or two
and a Gourd 'bash or two. I have bidding on both on e-bay, but keep
falling short.

I am seriously considering a Churchwarden from Boswell. The price seems
right, and the reviews have been outstanding on thier standard pipes. I
haven'theard anything about the churchwardens, but how much different
could they be?

And it would be my first NEW pipe purchase, from and actual pipemaker.
I got a couple new or near-new's on e-bay, but it just seems more
special to get one from a guy that crafted it with his own hands...
