Default Dunhill question

Why is the tanshell finish more costly than the black shell finish?
Wouldn't be the same process with a different color stain?

I would guess that the nicer grained pieces get the Tanshell Treatment
while the less attractive grains get covered up with the dark stain.

Great question. It used to be that different types of briar were used
for the two different finishes (Algerian and Grecian for the Shell and
exclusively Sardinian for the Tanshell). I would be rather suspect that
that is the case today. I think that it might very well be a matter of
there being such a small production of Tanshell in comparison to Shell.
Supply and demand translates to a higher price for the old white spot!

Tim & Jeff,

I've heard that, for example, the Cavichhi brown blasts are more costly than
the black blasts because the brown stain shows more of the grain,
consequently a better grained piece is required. I'm a little skeptical
about this grading difference in a blast pipe, but what do I know?

In both cases, there is no grain to either bring out or hide. That could be
the case with blast, not rusticated pipes.

It's usually the visible flaws in the wood. Visible sandpits would still
show if the color is light.

I still love shells, but I like rusticated and sandblasted pipes best,
they feel good in my hand, I do have some tinskys and von ercks that
are smooth and would not trade them for anything, but I have only one
tanshell and several shell, just to my eye they look like a pipe
