I used to be a big fan of the Humane Society, but I've seen some press that
indicates that the H.S. is cozying up a bit too much with Peta. I hope this
isn't true. June

That is a very commendable thing to do,Bob.It's just the kind of selfless
thing I would expect of you.On behalf of all the millions of unwanted
animals,Bob,thank you.Pet owner education is badly needed to combat the
overproduction of these animals.

Is every Humane Society in the US part of a national organization? I wish we
had something like that here in Moscow - I was recently witness to a bear
cub being abused (drugged to keep him docile/kept under bright, heat
generating lights so he would not hibernate even though it is high time for
him to do so) by someone who was trying to get kids to take their picture
with the poor furball in a mall. I must say he got no takers, and I was not
the only one who was disgusted by the scene, but I would have liked to have
had an animal control officer come and confiscate the bear.

Bob
I have some friends who do this and some that run rescues from their homes.
I adopted two dogs from these great people.
There are many moments that will leave a lasting impression on you good and
bad. San Francisco has one of the lowest kill rates in the nation and the
competition for adoption is fierce. You will have many favorites among the
animals but some will break your heart. The way some people treat animals is
sick and criminal/
Good luck and keep an open mind.

I did a similar thing volunteering at a local animal shelter for over a year
.... very rewarding to see the critters get adopted. Very heart breaking
when the other alternative happens. The key is to remember all the animals
you've helped to save when that happens.

LMAO! You're a funny guy,Bill.

This old lady, where we got our last kitten, was a hoarder. Some of these
individuals are completely out of touch with reality. She had around fifty
cats,of all ages. When her husband was alive she only had six inside
cats, now that he's gone I'm afraid to know how many live inside with
her.At least she wants to care for them, unlike so many pet owners.

Very important message, Bob. I volunteer time and business space to a
local no-kill shelter here in Atlanta, www.homelesspets.com. I usually
have three of their dogs staying here full time so I can work with them,
getting over their fear of people, etc. This rescue group gets the
tough cases, the embedded collars and food aggressive ones, the bald
from mange and the amputees. We have a pretty good adoption rate, but
as always, it could be better.

Also, to anyone reading, I need new ideas on a problem we are having
with two pups. They are 9 months old, a brother and sister, both
beagles, who were found living in the woods, probably their whole lives
thus far. I brought them home saturday, to join my other two beagles
and my lab in our home. When I taught them to use the doggie door in
the kitchen, they scampered under the deck (too low for me to crawl
after them) and will not get close enough to let one of us touch them.
I feed them, but even here in Georgia, the nights get cold.

Any ideas on getting them inside?

Hon', I honestly don't know. My hunch is that it's something like the Red
Cross in organizational style, but I could be completely off the mark. god
knows they do good work for which I aplaud them, but I would be quite
unhappy if I learned that there were a strong Peta connection. June
