Default Progress report on Golf Club Pipe

Good Morning Gents,I have reached a point in the carving of the golf club
pipe where I must decide the orientation of the bowl itself. The wood is
REALLY hard and I still have a way to go insofar as fairing the shape to my
hand, but that must come after orienting the bowl. I am presenting these
pics for your review:

I tend to favor #1 but then would need a longer stem/bit with a more complex
bend in it. My minds eye sees it almost Gandalf like in length (4-6")

#2 would be the easy way out, but that ****s the bowl at an awkward angle.

#3 is just a detail of the grain of the wood. Persimmon is very slow growing
so has very tight grain. As you can see in the illustration it is oriented
to provide strength for ball whacking.

Once I have the bowl done, I am almost certainly going to have to ask for
help fitting a stem/bit. I am also wondering about re-staining it back to
resemble the club from which it came. (Water-based stain and poly?)

Thanks in advance for your guidance!
Rich

Rich, whichever you choose, you're going to have to avoid those screws! I'm
sure you know more than I do about how far they penetrate the wood, but they
look to me like they don't leave you a lot of room.

Hello Rich,
Use Alcohol based stains avalable from Pimo's
http://www.pimopipecraft.com, and apply artist 'mask' to the screws
with a q-tip before staining. You can find paint masks at most art
supplies. After staining sand again using your finest sandpaper say
1500-2000 grit and then apply a coat of carnuba, then polish. I just
wonder though how well this is going to smoke? I would of thought it
would of been alot easier and better smoking to use a briar pipe kit,
or a meershaum kit. As for as the stem there's really no trick in
bending stems and are several ways of doing so, or you can have one
made by Mary Ann Keller http://www.smokingpiperepairs.com Hope this
helps.

All the Best,
Robert

Mostly this is just a project to see if it could be done. I have only been
on disability for 4 months and am going nuts looking for something to fill
the void. I was reading about the properties of briar and thought "well, I
have a mess of persimmon golf club heads, thatıs tough wood too. Hmmmmmm"
and the project was born. This wood was so unbelievably tough, it folded
over the cutting edge of one of my wood chisels, (a Stanley even).

So.... What do you guys think about the bowl? Nose or top?

Nose, definitely. It'll be a golf-horn!

Hey Rich, those will be very cool! You say those heads are from the Golf
Works? The one South of Newark Ohio? I go past there all the time as I
live in New Lexington. They used to have an impressive Christmas light
display.

Hmmm, I wonder if you could turn a pipe into a golf club.

This particular head came from Dynacraft, also in Newark. I have quite a
few from the Golfworks and some antiques from Burke which is the company
that pretty much started it all for Newark.

Have we pretty much agreed that I should drill the bowl from the Nose? That
would probably be the easiest, just trying to figure out how the stem should
then be shaped.

Rich

PS. Before my second stroke, I used a cane to walk. I could hit a tennis
ball almost 100 yds from the turf. Now I would probably just fall on my a$$.
