Default slow vs fast smoking

As a relatively new pipe-smoker giving up cigarettes, (I think that's the
reason), I find that I sometimes catch myself smoking much faster than I
should. Aside from the other obvious problems with smoking too fast, I
really enjoy it much more when I take in the smoke slowly, hold a second,
and slowly push it out.

Anybody else do this at times (smoke too fast?). Am I trying to get the
nicotine? Any suggestions?

I find that 4 puffs/min is really nice and relaxing, full of flavor.

best to you all,

bob

I considered myself to be a relatively slow smoker but 4 puffs/minute? Mine
is probably more like 10 - 20 per minute. But they are merely small sips.

I think you are doing well! If the bowl gets too hot though, just back off
or let it go out and relight after a few minutes.

Hi Bob,
I think your doing just fine as a new pipe smoker. Just remember that
pipe smoking isn't about a 'nicotine fix'. It's meant to be a
relaxing, enjoyable pastime much akin to the Japense ceremony where
each aspect contributes to the whole; from selecting a favorite pipe,
to selecting which tobacco to smoke, filling it, lighting it, and
savoring each puff down to the bottom of the bowl like a fine wine,
not to be rushed.
Who was it that said,'cigars are like watching a movie, cigarettes are
like watching T.V. and smoking a pipe is like reading a good book.'

All the Best,
Robert

I am amazed at the endless fascination with the Japanese aesthetic. When
making such ****ogies, just remember that they make their wine from rice, and
it's appalling swill.

Oh, I'm gonna get it now......

Hey Bob,
I don't think it has as much to do with how many puffs per minute, as
how slow and steady the draws are. The "breathing technique"
described somewhere (I think on the ASP homepage), would have smoke
moving through the pipe almost constantly. Good luck!

Thanks for that Steven. I was beginning to think I had completely
misunderstood how to smoke slowly.

Thank you Robert. This is much the way I do go into it. I like the quote
as well. And yes, it is great when I'm going at the right pace. Its when
I'm not enjoying it that I'm irked. It almost seems I have good pipe days
and bad pipe days. Kinda weird. I suspect it will take more experience.

I'm having a good pipe day today.

You know, once after John Lennon had a smoking session, he was heard to
exclaim, "I've got blisters on my tongue!"

Steven, thanks. I agree with you too. I was giving the rate I suppose as
what I find pleasurable to me. When its good, it *is* almost constant.
Slowly in, slowly out. Like someone said, "sipping", however to me that
means slow, not tiny.

I have read the "breath smoking" article, tried that, and couldn't quite get
it. As a matter of fact, I'll confess that I smoke a pipe unlike most
people... I hold the pipe and take it away from my mouth to blow out. At
least I won't get tooth-marks on the stems.

thanks again!

Bernie, I guess you and I do it differently. I think all that's important
is that we enjoy it.
