S.S.Pierce and Ehlrich
A friend of mine says he used to work for Ehrlich's, which as I understand it
was/is (affiliated with?) a pipe shop in Boston. Don't know if he still works
there or is even alive, but theysupposedly had an in-house pipe-maker who also
did repairs and such, a gentleman who, IIRC, had the last name of Bushey (or
something vastly similar).
My buddy has a number of Ehrlich pipes, many of which predate not only either
himself or Mr. Bushey, but indeed went back to what I was given to understand
was the (very) early 20th century. They appear to be made of Algerian briar,
and although smallish in size, at leat for my tastes, render an absolutely
delightful smoke! At any rate, the shop had evidently been there quite a while!
BTW, Ehrlich pipes are not to be confused with the English brand "Erlick,"
itself a fine old-line company that, at least once upon a time, produced a fine
product but nowadays may just be relegated to tobacco labels (no idea if it is
the original firm or just a purchased and copyrighted name).
Maybe one of our Bostonian posters can add more to the discussion? Andy S.
