Default S.S.Pierce and Ehlrich

I recently picked up a group of Estate pipes on Ebay for $20.00. I
dont know anything about them and wonder if anyone here can tell me
anything?

1 S.S. Pierce CO, Roundtable,
3 Ehlrich, one of which has never been smoked
1 supersport, made in England, bulldog

They are all in pretty good shape, a few have some cake buildup on top
of the bowel.Thanks

A friend of mine says he used to work for Ehrlich's, which as I understand it
was/is (affiliated with?) a pipe shop in Boston. Don't know if he still works
there or is even alive, but theysupposedly had an in-house pipe-maker who also
did repairs and such, a gentleman who, IIRC, had the last name of Bushey (or
something vastly similar).

My buddy has a number of Ehrlich pipes, many of which predate not only either
himself or Mr. Bushey, but indeed went back to what I was given to understand
was the (very) early 20th century. They appear to be made of Algerian briar,
and although smallish in size, at leat for my tastes, render an absolutely
delightful smoke! At any rate, the shop had evidently been there quite a while!

BTW, Ehrlich pipes are not to be confused with the English brand "Erlick,"
itself a fine old-line company that, at least once upon a time, produced a fine
product but nowadays may just be relegated to tobacco labels (no idea if it is
the original firm or just a purchased and copyrighted name).

Maybe one of our Bostonian posters can add more to the discussion? Andy S.

S.S. Pierce was a well-known gourmet shop in New York (maybe elsewhere as
well). It was still in operation in the 60s.
It was "the" place to cater bon voyage parties and for hostess gifts. Any pipe
you have bearing this name was made by somebody else. I could not begin to
guess at who the maker was.

Ehrlich is still operating in Boston. I believe contempory pipes are made by
whomever. In years past, Ehrlich made some of its own pipes.

Have 3 smooth Ehlrich pipes, algerian briar, stamped Boston, and they are
damned fine smokers! Recieved them from an estate of one guy that also included
some in-house-pipes from other pipe shops around the United States...this old
guy had FINE taste in his selection of pipes....his earlier pipe choices were
the traditional shapes, but his later and last pipes bought were in the 1970's,
and consist of mostly radical early popular freehands. Interesting, how you can
see about someone just by their pipes. I have about 70 of this old man's pipes,
and he was a bad pipe abuser...have Charatan's Makes with bowl rims burned to
hell...a Dunhill patent with bowl chipped and stem chewed to hell and so loose
it will fall out..Kaywoodie hand made that is burt and stem oxidized and
chewed...all stems chewed and ozidized, etc. However, this old guy had fine
taste in pipes...he also travelled a lot, and tended to visit the major pipe
stores in town, due to the in-house-pipes he had, and also the pipes old sold
in the UK (mostly)...other things, but....I am a history major....so, it
interests me on some level.
