For my fellow Brother's of the Leaf who are also computer/technology
geeks...

Here's the front... ain't it beeeyotiful? *wipes tear from eye*
http://modzer0.cs.uaf.edu/~warbird/p...ront_panel.jpg

Dual 2.4 Ghz Opteron luvin, 4 GB of registered ECC DDR400 RAM (2
separate banks of RAM, 2 GB per CPU). I just love all the serial
cables going to the RAID controller (the red wires)...
http://modzer0.cs.uaf.edu/~warbird/p...o_Opterons.jpg

I think my baby will stay nice n' cool:
http://modzer0.cs.uaf.edu/~warbird/p..._case_fans.jpg

And she's gonna serve up 1.75 TB of storage space via eight 250 GB
SATA150 drives setup in a RAID 5 array (the OS lives on its own,
separate 80 GB SCSI drive)...
http://modzer0.cs.uaf.edu/~warbird/p...SATA_luvin.jpg

And lastly, how does a 760W triple-redundant power supply grab ya?
This beyatch has THREE power cables, so if one unit ever goes bad, I
can hot swap 'em and never have to take the server down:
http://modzer0.cs.uaf.edu/~warbird/p...t_goodness.jpg

So that's my baby. I'll take a couple more pics in the next day or
two, when I've got her all hooked up and in the rack. Oh... guess what
my boss just told me? Looks like we may get funding for THREE more of
these bad mofo's sometime next year.

BWUAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Too. Much. Power.

I wish they'd let me take a picture of the server rooms that I service,
James. If you love the one you just got, you'd be making a mess in your
pants... ;-)

Nice box, though.

I hear you, Joe. Having been a SysAdmin at the Supercomputing center
up here, I'm no newb when it comes to the big iron. I'm just excited
about these new boxes because they are alllllll mine. No security BS
to go through. None of that red tape when you know a change needs to
be made but you have to ask your supervisor who doesn't know a damned
thing technically and then it takes month for the change to be
implemented, and even when they do decide to implement it, a task
force must be arranged and they place a guy in charge of the "task
force" who also doesn't have a fucking clue as to what needs to be
done so another month passes and by that time a newer patch is out or
whatever and now you have to start the whole process all over again.
*Grrrrrr*

Anyway... the buck stops with me, so to speak. I manage these
machines, secure them, upgrade them... everything. And I love it.
Shit gets done when it needs to be done and if something goes wrong, I
generally know why pretty quickly. No red tape. I can't begin to
tell you how good that feels. ;-)

Did you know AMD has stated that their new "dual core" Opteron's will
utilize socket 940? I made sure to get socket 940's on these systems
so that if the power req's for the new dual cores are within limits,
I'll eventually be able to about double my computational power by
simply swapping out some CPU's. :-)

Joe, an admin type question for ya... each of these new servers I
have/am getting has the triple redundant PSU's, with three power cords
per server. I've got APC "Back-ups Pro" UPS's, I think it's 1000 or
1100 Va and each UPS will be plugged into its own outlet that is on
its own 20 Amp circuit. Do you think I should plug all three power
cords from each server into its own UPS, or plug 1 cord from each
server into a different UPS, thereby (when I have 4 of these systems)
having up to 3 servers on 3 different UPS's?

I hope the question makes sense... kinda hard to word it. I'm
thinking each server should be on its own UPS. Also, I'm thinking
that one of these UPS's will be able to run one server, with CPU's
under full load, for 30+ minutes. No monitors will be on these UPS's
and no other devices, either.

Wow, I'm more than a little impressed! It looks great. Did you put
this puppy together yourself? And what do you plan on doing with it?
You could have the fastest newsreader ever. Hehehe.

Do you plan on using that thang at the HOUSE?

Yes, very nice ... Wonderful ...

Good God, got enough horse power there??????

What are the diameter of the cooling fans?

DAMN, Son, got enough disk space there?

<shaking my head>

Easy does it there, tiger!

I'M SO JEALOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, I bought it pre-assembled from www.aslab.com they do a great job
and have quality equipment. TBH, I don't think I could have built it
for as cheap as I got it from them.

This machine is for my Lab. We do a lot of research that requires a
lot of computation and a lot of storage space.

Each Power Supply should have it's own circuit. That includes the UPS.
You have 3 P/S', so 3 UPS'. When you add servers to the rack, you can
keep plugging in to the same 3 UPS' until you reach capacity.

This way, if a UPS dies (and it will), you will not have to take down
any servers to replace it. Just pull the plug from the wall, and
replace the UPS.

If you put one server on it's own UPS, then you lose redundancy. There
should be no single point of failure under your control.

Also, the Monitor should by on a UPS. Use a flat-screen if you are
concerned about power, but if the power goes out, and you need to do
something at the server, it'll be tough without a monitor... ;-)

Howdy Phil. Doing great. Yourself?

No, no. This is for my research Lab. We do need that much computer
and it'll be nice to get 3 more next year. :-)

Actually, no. I'm hoping to be able to upgrade the CPU's to the
"dual-core" Opterons in a year or two. ;-)

Good question... they are... large? I don't know the exact size.

For now, yes. Again, the 3 new servers next year will really help.
We've been very cramped with only a 750 GB storage server.

It is my pleasure to take care of machines such as this. I'm a total
tech junky.

Will do. Thanks for the input.

It's a CRT monitor and it, the gigabit switch, and the KVM switch are
all on their own UPS.
