I was in Walgreens yesterday (here in Kansas) and saw that stuff too. I
bought a corncob pipe on a whim there a few months ago.

There are 4 Walgreens within 5 to 10 minute drive from me and they all carry
it so you can bet they sell it. The one I do most business with is
sometimes out of the Golden Burley and the Burley light. The guy there says
they sell a lot of it, so there must be a bunch of closet pipe smokers. I
have never seen another pipe smoker in my travels about town.

My Walgreens carries the same thing. Drugstore tabacs, cobs, and
Grabows. Plus pipe cleaners, paper filters, flints, and big bags of
There are more pipe smokers than you think, but they don’t read
ASP, or buy McC’s or GLP, or have anything like a Stanwell, Tinsky,
or Anne Julie. They all go to Walgreens. 🙂
What interests me now
is the state of my prostate.
Not that it’s hurting.

You should try their bulk house brand tobaccos. I love Toasted Cavendish and
Burley and Black. Several people on this site like others. I think they have
8 or 10 varieties that are very good and quite cheap.

There is a Walgreens that has an extensive tobacco section a few miles
from my house in Portland, Oregon. I have never purchased any of
their tobacco, but would give it a try except that it comes in 1-
Walgreens has the best prices on accessories such as corncob pipes,
pipe cleaners, etcetera I was on a trip in Boise, Idaho and forgot
to pack any tobacco. I picked up a package Borgam Rif from Walgreens
to get me through the week.

In San Francisco, only two of the dozen or so Walgreen’s carry this stuff. I
am not sure why.

More grabows and Capt. Black are sold at walgreens than all “true” pipes and
tobacco at pipe shops combined. We who smoke and crave the “higher end” of
the pipe smoking experience are the exception rather than the norm. FreddyV

Same story in Colorado Springs, Grabows, cobs, Capt. Black, Velvet, Prince
Albert, bags of bulk. I was pretty big on the Burley Light when I first got
serious about a pipe, moved on to VAs much to the detriment of my wallet. Of
course back then I was smoking 8-10 bowls a day and now 4 bowls is a heavy day,
usually 3 and sometimes only 2. I think Walgreens catches some people suffering
“sticker shock” when a carton of butts jumps another dollar or two in price.
They buy the Grabow and a sack of leaf to try and beat the system, not knowing
that you have to LEARN to smoke a pipe, not just light one end and suck on the
other. They should give instruction booklets to new smokers.

In addition to Walgreens, there is another drugstore chain around here
(central Texas) called Eckerds. They carry a large selection of Dr.
G’s as well as bulk tobaccos. You can buy big 1 pound bags of the
stuff, if you care to.

I saw a lone pouch of Cap’t Black on the shelf below the cigs at the
Walgreen’s by my house in San Francisco. No pipes though… But
seeing as i’m a newbie i just may have never noticed before now…
I have Sherlock’s Haven so i’m content.

It does seem to be localized. Some Rite-Aids and Walgreen’s around here
stock the snot out of Dr. Grabows and tabak. Others three miles away
seem to be ignorant of their existence. I wonder how much latitude the
store manager has in stocking – I wouldn’t think much.

Walgreens in Kentucky and Ohio carries everything afore mentioned.
Grabows, cleaners, cobs, bulks, and pouch tobaccos. I smoke Skandinavik
Regular on occasion and Walgreens is the only place that I seem to find it.
