I’m trying to set up a form in Adobe Acrobat where the user can type in one of the form fields and then automatically go to the next form field in the tab chain without manually tabbing on the next box. How can I achieve this?

How will Acrobat know you’ve finished completing a field?

you’d have to limit the field to a certain number of characters, like in the case of a social security or phone number.

I tried to limit the number of characters to just one and it still didn’t work. I can’t believe I stumped the panel on this one.

I suggest that you open a new topic, as this is a completely different question. I would also suggest giving a minimum of information, such as programs involved and their versions, as well as your OS version.
