Default Alpha expansion?

Hi all. You know how you can make a mask and then use the "mask expansion" property to grow and shrink it in a way different from scaling? Is it possible to do that to a layer's alpha?

Specifically, I want to make some text, and then expand or contract its alpha to use as a track matte for some cheesy glow effect. Scaling doesn't give the result I want. Any ideas? Thanks!

What if I'm a cheap-a$$ and don't have the production bundle?

Oh, sorry. I never remember which plugins are PB-only. Do you have channel blur? Blur the alpha and then use levels to choke it back? If the text is a solid color, you can get away with fast blur instead of channel blur.
