won't paste paths from Illustrator - help !!!

When I copy a path to the clipboard in Illustrator CS, then I select a layer in (AE 5.5 OSX) the Timeline and go to Paste it in as a mask - Paste is not available in the menu.
If I draw a path in the Comp window and copy it, it will then paste back in. But the clipboard does not seem to be operating between programmes.
Urgent - this is for work - please help !!

In your Illustrator Preferences make sure the AICB option in the clipboard section is switched on.
