This is a bug in Microsoft. Check out

It turns out that outlook express for whatever reason sometimes corrupts the file order in the open file dialog box. The change in sort order is permanent. There is a fix posted on

<http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm> line 19, right entry. That fixed the problem.
