Cloning Stamp Quit

Here is one more question regarding the cloning stamp tool. I have been successfully using the cloning stamp for quite awhile-until today. When I attempt to establish my own pattern (by selecting the area to be cloned within a marque rectangle) the "establish a pattern" button is greyed out.

Does anyone have a solution for this problem?

I am using a Max OS X and photoshop elements-not version 2.

gremlins...at least they have gone, for now

Well, it's working again. Don't know what happened to make it quit or to restart, but I'm happy to be back in the cloning business!
