Well now I did another way.

I created a new layer and made sure that I was working on that layer. I used the rectangular marquee tool to select all of the image then did ... copy merged and pasted it onto the new layer. That left me with the two existing layers plus a third layer which was the original two merged ... does that make sense?

I have to admit that I am useless with shortcuts ... definitely a click addict.
