Thumbnail blurred

After editing a jpg with PSE2, my thumbnail image is distorted and converted to B&W? What gives? Also in a non-thumbnail view of the folder, my JPGs show up as Bitmap icons but are truly jpgs. I am using windows 2000. THANKS
