why doesn't filters preserve settings?

Each time I use a filter and look at the result, the next time I go back the settings are at the default. Why don't the settings I just used remain so I can alter from my last rendition?

Am I missing something?

Yes some do and some don't ...which in particular are you having problems with ? ....maybe there is another solution.
