Align text option?

When choosing the align text center icon, what is it aligning the text based on? Where you click?

Yes - Technically called "the insertion point" <s>

That is, if you click to start the text.

If you drag a rectangle out with the text tool, you then have more alignment options (justified, etc), and the dragged shape is a rectangle you will center, left, or right justify within.
