Default Clone Tool + others cause Photoshop crash

System: Dell 8300, 1 GB RAM, 120GB and 80GB Hard drive. HP Scanjet 3C and Nikon Coolscan 4000. Photoshop CS. Windows XP Home.

Had no problems up to now with the tools. Then scanned in 799 images and began editing. Of the 799, 20 files have produced the "permanent error send to Microsoft" when the clone, erase and healing brush tool is initially Alt+mouse click to select the source area. Can do tone and color corrections ok. The scanning device has no bearing on the problem since errors occur for flatbed and slide scanner images. Have latest updates (as far as I know) for both XP and CS. Error signature: App name=Photoshop.exe, AppVer=8.0.0.0, ModName=mmxcore.8bx, ModVer=8.0.0.0, Offset=00028238. Exception information: Code=0xc0000096,Flags=0x(all zeroes), Record=same as flags, Address=0x(9 zwores)4208238, etc. Same error information for all the failing images.

Any suggestions on the problem our how to get it fixed?

Thanks, Joe
